I love using Copic Sketch markers because they come with two different nibs: a chisel nib and a brush nib.

The chisel nib is great for creating two different line widths, depending on which side I use. I can use the wide side for thick lines and the short side for thin lines.

My favorite nib is the "Super Brush Nib." It works like a paintbrush, but instead of individual brush hairs, it's made of felt. This allows me to control the line width by pressing harder or softer. When I press lightly, I can create a thin line, and when I press harder, I can create a thick line. I can also use the side of the brush nib to create a thick line.

Both nibs are very durable and won't fray easily. But if I use them a lot, they might wear down. If this happens, I can buy new nibs. The replacement chisel nib is called "medium broad," and the replacement brush nib is called "super brush." There are also two other nibs I can buy for Copic Sketch markers: the "medium round" and the "sketch fine."

The ink used in all four styles of Copic markers is the same. It is an odorless, alcohol-based, dye-based ink. This means that the dye is carried by alcohol instead of water. Since alcohol evaporates much faster than water, Copic markers interact with paper differently than water-based markers. In other words, they don't cause the paper to pill up or buckle the way water-based markers can.

Copic markers are easy to layer and the inks layer beautifully. They also produce a beautiful, velvety matte finish.

Copic markers are considered "permanent" in the sense that the ink is indelible or waterproof, but this doesn't mean that they will last forever. Copic Sketch markers are permanent but they are not lightfast. This means that they are susceptible to fading when exposed to ultraviolet light. If I plan to display my Copic artwork in a well-lit area, I should seal it with a UV-blocking spray to protect it from fading.

Blending Copic Markers

There are many ways to blend Copic markers. Blending means mixing the colors together to create a smooth transition from one color to another. For example, you can blend yellow into green, or dark gray into light gray. The goal is to create one even area of color without any streaks.

Tips for Blending

• Work quickly because the alcohol in the ink dries fast.
• Practice different blending techniques in a sketchbook before you start a drawing.
• Plan ahead by deciding which colors you will use and laying them out.
• Use three markers to create a simple one-hue gradation, such as light blue, midtone blue, and dark blue.
• Layer the markers to create a smooth transition.
• Use an intermediate marker to make blending easier. For example, use orange to blend yellow and red.
• Move the marker quickly and randomly when blending.
• Use the brush nib to feather or flick the edges together.
• Touch the tips of two markers together to transfer ink.
• Layer new marks on top of a dry area to create a transition.
• Stipple or draw tiny dots to layer one area over and into the next.
• Cross-hatch to create transitions.
• Make sure your markers have enough ink to blend well.
• Use the Copic Colorless Blender to lighten Copic inks or erase mistakes.

Copic markers are the perfect balance, they aren't too wet or over saturated in ink. If you use the right kind of paper, called marker paper, the ink doesn't bleed through much at all. Out of 72 markers, only 2 or 3 made the edges of the lines a little fuzzy. Most of the markers make crisp or slightly soft edges. If you work on an area too much, the ink might bleed through to the back of the paper.

Color Family

The first letter on the label indicates the color family. The Copic color system includes 10 color families:

• E: Earth
• B: Blue
• BV: Blue-Violet
• V: Violet
• RV: Red-Violet
• R: Red
• YR: Yellow-Red (Orange)
• Y: Yellow
• YG: Yellow-Green
• G: Green

Color Purity

The first number on the label indicates the color purity. The higher the number, the more muted the color. The lower the number, the more saturated the color. For example, B00 is a very pure blue, while B09 is a very muted blue.

Color Value

The second number on the label indicates the color value. The higher the number, the darker the color. The lower the number, the lighter the color. For example, B000 is a very light blue, while B099 is a very dark blue.

Toner

Some Copic markers have a T at the end of the label. These markers are slightly warm, and they match the color of copy machine toner.

The label B00T indicates a very pure, light blue that is slightly warm.

Using the Color System

The Copic color system can be used to find similar colors, create gradients, and blend colors. For example, if you want to find a color that is lighter than B00, you would look for a B01 or B02. If you want to create a gradient from light blue to dark blue, you could use B00, B02, B04, B06, B08, and B09. If you want to blend two colors together, you could use B00 and B02, or B02 and B04.

Copic markers come with a blending group number on the label as well. This number helps you find markers that will blend together smoothly. The blending group number is the last number on the label, after the T for toner. The blending groups are numbered 0 to 9, with 0 being the most compatible and 9 being the least compatible.
